The short answer: late spring to early autumn

For most visitors the best time to visit Mount Pilatus is the cogwheel season. In 2026 the railway from Alpnachstad runs from 11 May to 29 November, and the gondola and Dragon Ride from Kriens run alongside it, apart from maintenance breaks. In this window you can go up one side and come down the other.

Hikers should aim for mid-June or later, when the high trails are normally open. The Golden Round Trip by boat, railway and cable car runs from May to October. In winter the mountain stays open, but only on the Kriens side.

What each season is good for

Pick the route first, then the activity.

Summer: hiking and the full circuit

Summit hikes are recommended from mid-June. The Flower Path to the Tomlishorn takes about 90 minutes one way and runs from June to October. Walking up from Kriens or Alpnachstad takes roughly five hours. The rope park and Dragon Glider at Fräkmüntegg ran from 25 April to 18 October 2026.

Autumn: the cogwheel without the crowds

The railway keeps running until 29 November, but the earliest and latest departures stop after 24 October, so the day gets shorter. On weekends from 24 October to 15 November 2026 there is an autumn tour combining a boat from Lucerne and the cogwheel railway, with limited seats.

Golden Round Trip →

Winter: Kriens only

From 28 November 2026 the cogwheel stays closed and the gondola and Dragon Ride take you to the top. The Dragon Path is free and open in winter, though parts may not be walkable. Winter activities such as sledging and snowshoe trails are advertised, but we could not verify the dates, so check the official Pilatus website before you go.

Staying on the summit →

Spring: opening dates

The cogwheel opened on 11 May in 2026 and traditionally runs from May to November. The 2027 start date is not confirmed yet. Gondola-side maintenance in 2026 was 30 and 31 March.

Check the weather before you go

Cloud decides whether the trip is worth it.

Cloud can sit on the summit while Lucerne is clear, and the other way round. We do not publish temperature or snow averages because we could not verify them. Instead, look at the webcams and the operating status on the official site at pilatus.ch/live on the morning you travel. The status page also shows closures, which is how the autumn maintenance break is announced.

If the summit is clouded in, the same day can work well at Mount Rigi or on the lake. Our guide to Lucerne lists alternatives.
