Three kinds of Pilatus trips
Mount Pilatus is easy to reach without a guide. Lucerne station is 16 minutes from Alpnachstad by train, and the trains and boats run to a fixed timetable. Even so, many visitors book a packaged trip because it bundles transport and removes the planning.
Offers fall into three groups. Which one fits depends on how much of the logistics you want to hand over, and on which passes you already hold.

The main types compared
What you get, and for whom it makes sense.
| Type | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Self-guided round trip ticket | You buy a ticket such as the Golden Round Trip and set your own pace. Boat, cogwheel railway, cable car and bus run on public timetables. | Independent travellers and Swiss Travel Pass holders |
| Guided day trip from Zurich or Lucerne | A group trip with a guide, usually with return transport from the starting city and the mountain ticket. | First-time visitors who want everything arranged |
| Combination trip | Pilatus together with a second goal such as Mount Rigi, the lake or the old town of Lucerne, sold as one booking. | Short stays with limited time |
The ready-made Golden Round Trip ticket is covered in detail on the Golden Round Trip page.

Self-guided Golden Round Trip tickets
The classic, with no guide.
A Golden Round Trip ticket covers the boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway, the Dragon Ride cable car, the gondola and bus 1 back to Lucerne. You decide where to eat and how long to stay at the top. The regular price is CHF 119.80 in 2026, and with a Swiss Travel Pass it drops to CHF 42. This is usually the best value if you already own a pass.
In 2026 the boats to Alpnachstad ran until 18 October and the gondola is closed until 27 November. See the best time to visit page for seasons.
Guided day trips and combinations
From Lucerne
Guided trips that start in Lucerne usually combine a guide with the standard mountain transport. Check the duration and how much free time you get at the top.
From Zurich
Zurich to Lucerne takes about 41 minutes by direct train, so a day trip from Zurich is possible without a tour. A guided version adds the transfer and a fixed schedule. Zurich Airport to Lucerne is about 1 hour 10 minutes.
With other mountains or the lake
Combinations pair Pilatus with Mount Rigi, Mount Titlis or a lake cruise. Doing two mountains in one day is long, so check the timings.
What to check before you book
Details that decide whether a tour is worth its price.
Is the boat included?
Some packages include the cogwheel railway but not the boat. The boat ride to Alpnachstad takes 70 to 90 minutes and is a large part of the Golden Round Trip.
Which cogwheel section is covered?
The ticket should state whether it covers up, down or both, and whether the gondola from Kriens is part of it.
Swiss Travel Pass overlap
With the pass, boat and bus 1 are free and the mountain costs half. A package that includes boat and bus means you pay twice for things you already hold. Compare it with the pass price of CHF 42 for the Golden Round Trip.
Time at the top and seat reservation
Check how long you get on the summit and whether a cogwheel seat is reserved. The Lucerne Travel Pass does not include the reservation.
Current closures
Ask if the tour uses the gondola and Dragon Ride, which are closed from 19 October to 27 November 2026.
Going alone versus going with a tour
| On your own | With a tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Often lower, especially with a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass | Higher, covers organisation and often a guide |
| Flexibility | You choose the departure and the time at the top | Fixed schedule |
| Effort | You read timetables and buy tickets | Everything arranged |
| Weather change | Switch to another day or route | Depends on the booking terms |
If you have a pass and a day to spare, go alone. If you are short on time or travelling in a group, a tour saves effort. Compare prices on the tickets and prices page first.
Mount Pilatus tours: frequently asked questions
Do I need a tour to visit Mount Pilatus?
No. You can book your own ticket and use public trains, boats and buses. A tour only adds convenience.
Can I visit Pilatus as a day trip from Zurich?
Yes. Zurich to Lucerne takes about 41 minutes, and Alpnachstad is another 16 minutes by S-Bahn. Zurich to Alpnachstad takes about 1 hour 18 minutes in total.
Is a tour cheaper than buying tickets myself?
Often not. A package can be good value for people without a pass. With a Swiss Travel Pass your own tickets are usually cheaper.
What should a Pilatus tour include?
At least the cogwheel railway or the Kriens cable cars, ideally the boat. Read the description for what is missing.
Do tours run in autumn and winter?
Only part of the mountain is open. The cogwheel railway runs until 29 November 2026, and in winter only the cable cars from Kriens run.
