Lucerne in a day, mountains in the rest
Lucerne is compact. The Chapel Bridge, the old town, the Lion Monument and the lake promenade can be walked in half a day, and none of them charges admission. That leaves time for a mountain or a boat trip, which is why many visitors stay several days.
This guide covers the city first and then the five most common excursions: Mount Pilatus, Mount Rigi, Mount Titlis, the Stanserhorn and a lake cruise. Prices are for adults in 2026.

City highlights on foot
Everything below is walkable from the station.
Chapel Bridge and Water Tower
The Chapel Bridge crosses the Reuss and was built in 1333. It burned on 18 August 1993 and reopened on 14 April 1994. The Water Tower beside it dates from around 1290 to 1300. Crossing is free.
Lion Monument
Carved into a rock face, the monument was unveiled in 1821 to a design by Bertel Thorvaldsen. It measures 10 by 6 metres and commemorates the Swiss Guards who fell in 1792. Admission is free, and it is about 15 minutes on foot from the station.
Musegg wall
The old town wall is free to visit and can be reached on foot.
Lake promenade
The promenade runs along the lake near the centre. The boats leave from piers 1, 2 and 3. Pier 2 is across from the station and serves Alpnachstad.

If you have only an hour in the city, walk from the station to the Chapel Bridge and the old town, then to the Lion Monument. Building work on the station forecourt continues until 12 December 2026 with some bus stops moved, but access to the boat piers stays open.

Pilatus is the shortest trip door to door: 16 minutes by S5 plus 27 minutes on the cogwheel railway. Rigi starts with a boat across the lake, which is a trip in itself. Titlis is the longest and the only one on a glacier. The Stanserhorn is the quickest to reach by train, about 14 minutes to Stans, then a historic funicular and the open CabriO cable car, about 25 minutes in total.
With a Half Fare Card you pay half on the mountain railways. The Titlis fare is the figure shown on its website, and the page does not state the year. The Titlis Rotair is out of service from 17 August to 11 December 2026 for rebuilding, and a new single-rope cabin runs instead. Pilatus has an extra closure of the gondola side until 27 November 2026.
Which excursion to pick
Each mountain has its own guide.

Mount Pilatus tickets and prices
The steepest cogwheel railway in the world, with routes and 2026 prices.

Mount Rigi
Europe's first mountain railway, free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Mount Titlis
A glacier mountain above Engelberg, with the Rotair rebuilt in 2026.

Stanserhorn
A historic funicular and the open-top CabriO to the summit.

Lake Lucerne cruises
Five historic paddle steamers and 14 motor ships on the lake.
The Stanserhorn season in 2026 runs from 11 April to 22 November. The lake has a winter timetable from 19 October 2026 to 16 April 2027, with regular steamer service to Alpnachstad not published since 19 October. The Golden Round Trip is covered in its own guide.
The Lucerne Travel Pass
It replaces the older Tell-Pass. The exact date of the change is not verified.
The pass costs CHF 240 for 3 consecutive days, CHF 265 for 4, CHF 290 for 5 and CHF 365 for 10. Children aged 6 to 16 pay a flat CHF 30. It covers Pilatus, Rigi, Stanserhorn, Titlis and the lake boats. Seat reservations, winter day tickets and bikes are not included, and a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass gives no extra discount on it.
A rough check: Pilatus (CHF 84), Rigi (CHF 84) and Stanserhorn (CHF 82) add up to CHF 250 at full price, more than the 3-day pass at CHF 240. If you already hold a Swiss Travel Pass, Rigi, Stanserhorn and the boats are free, so you probably do not need the Lucerne pass. See best time to visit Pilatus to match dates to what is open.
